As one of the first higher education institutions west of the Mississippi River, Northeastern State University has a long and distinctive history. Founded by the Cherokee people and then converted by the State of Oklahoma into one of the first Normal Schools to prepare teachers for the state, the Tahlequah campus is a living testament to the passion for education of those who settled in the Tahlequah area.
Our Muskogee and Broken Arrow campuses speak to that same passion for education among local residents as well, adding to the uniqueness of a university that serves residents of small towns throughout rural eastern Oklahoma, those living in mid-size cities like Muskogee, and those living in metropolitan Tulsa. We are truly a people’s university, providing access for those pursuing degree programs and for others who enter into partnerships with us to develop our region.
We are dedicated to the success of all who enter our doors. We are dedicated to the preparation of future leaders. We are proud of our unique history and of our distinctiveness.
At Northeastern State, learning comes first. It is the primary reason we are here, and every decision we make is grounded in what we believe will enhance learning opportunities for our students. Also, we believe that everything teaches: every interaction, every activity, and every experience. Therefore, we believe that all faculty members and staff members at Northeastern State play a significant role in the education of a student. Learning doesn’t just occur within the four walls of a classroom or on the computer screen of an online class.
I also believe that at Northeastern State you can gain perspective as a global citizen, understanding the principles that undergird a democracy and experiencing what it means to live a democratic way of life. You can do that at Northeastern State by engaging in classroom activities and co-curricular opportunities that are open to all students, by studying abroad, and by participating in events and activities you will find nowhere else in the world. With over 30 American Indian nations and over 25 countries represented by students on our campuses, you have an incredible opportunity to learn from individuals as well throughout your time here.
We hope that you join us at NSU in fulfilling your goals and realizing your dreams. We promise that we will do everything we can to help you be successful, to help you acquire knowledge and skills needed to be effective in a global environment, and to help you realize that there is a connection between being an educated citizen and sustaining a democratic way of life.
Join us and become part of the Northeastern State University community.
