Social Security Card

Applying for a Social Security Card

Please note that students wishing to apply for a social security card must have a formal job offer for an institutional student worker position from an office or department on campus. Current job postings can be found in the Financial Aid section of the NSU website here.

1. Students should apply for a posted position by contacting the department directly and submitting an application for student employment.

2. When the student is hired, the department will complete a contract request and send it to Student Financial Services where the request will be processed.

3. Once the contract is printed, it will be sent to the Office of International Programs.

4. The Office of International Programs will issue a letter to the Social Security Administration and contact the student to stop by and over procedures required to apply for a Social Security Number.

5. The student will need to bring the following documents to the Social Security Administration Office.

a. Student copy of signed student employment contract
b. Letter from the Office of International Programs
c. I-20 (must have Department of Homeland Security stamp on the front)
d. I-94 card
e. Passport
f. Secondary photo id (driver's license, NSU ID)

6. The Social Security Administration Office in Muskogee is located at 2401 W. Shawnee Street. Please click here for a map and detailed directions.

7. Once the student has applied for a social security card, they will receive a letter stating the estimated processing time. The student can begin working but will not be able to get paid until a copy of the card is received by Student Financial Services and the Payroll Office.

8. Once the student receives the social security card in the mail, they must bring a copy to the Office of International Programs.
