Student Rights and Responsibilities 

Department Mission Statement

To educate students about their rights and responsibilities as students in order to promote responsible decision making, accountability, and academic success.

Department Summary (description of services and staff) 

The Student Rights and Responsibilities area focuses on protecting student rights and holding students accountable for their behaviors.

The Coordinator of Student Rights and Responsibilities develops policies and procedures related to student conduct and works with a variety of campus constituents to enhance campus safety and enforce behavioral expectations. 

Tenets: 

 The Student Rights and Responsibilities staff works to serve students by:

• Developing and enforcing standards of conduct in order to assist students in the development of personal responsibility and positive decision-making
• Developing, publishing, promoting, and meeting compliance requirements related to student conduct and student rights
• Collaborating with the campus community to increase reporting, campus safety, and fair processes.

 Initiatives

Student Rights and Responsibility initiatives for 2014-2016 are the following (priority order):

1. Assessment

2. Health and Wellness

3. Leadership/Civic Engagement

a. Utilize opportunities to connect students to leadership opportunities through community service, campus programming, or volunteerism.
b. Train students about University policy and procedures and Rights and Responsibilities in order to encourage their participation and ownership of their rights and responsibilities as students and citizens

4. Collaboration
Objective 1 (task to complete initiative)– NSU and greater community partnerships
Action Steps
a. Identify campus community members who could serve as investigators and panel members
b. train investigators and Panel members
c. Improve processes for providing preliminary information regarding the conduct process and student rights therin
d. Identify and create partnerships with police, DA, and others to assist in educating and serving our students and to improve on and off campus procedures.
Success measure(s):
1. Have a ready list that incorporates teams and rotation schedules for investigations
2. Offer trainings one time per semester minimum
3. Develop practices and procedures through as needed meetings with on and off campus partners

5. Technology

a. Explore software options to facilitate case management and record-keeping
b. Improve website and use of contents therin for compliance with Cleary, Title IX, Campus SaVE, VAWA, and others

6. Campus Safety
Objective 1 (task to complete initiative)– Continue to utilize the Behavioral Intervention Team to proactively prevent and address threats to campus safety

a. Facilitate BIT maintenance and development
b. Develop BIT policies and practices
c. Explore other options for improving campus safety such as MSAT (Multi-disciplinary sexual-assault teams) and CCR (Coordinated Community Response)

7. Professional Development

8. Career Readiness

a. The Student Rights and Responsibilities area will explore and maximize opportunities to employ and train graduate students in the area of student rights and responsibilities in order for them to gain work experience and practical knowledge of the higher education field.

1. Employ and train 1-3 GAs per year (Increase recruitment from NSU HE program)

9. Division Advancement
Objective 1 (task to complete initiative)– Plan for the growth and development of the area
Action Steps
a. Update Rights and Responsibility Website (Include new policies and easy to find information for students)
b. Expand the area in terms of staff, space, and resources to keep up with the demands of the conduct process campus-wide and accommodating other priorities such as Title IX and Cleary Reporting
c. Work with campus partners (Campus Police) to explore the option of a shared position that generates reports for Cleary (and others), conducts hearings, conducts trainings, and assists both areas in meeting strategic goals

1. Ongoing website updates completed
2. Utilize assessment data to plan future development in the area: Identify areas of need and share with VPSA
