Northeastern State University strives for an enriching environment conducive to learning through the exchange of ideas in all areas of our campus communities. To maximize a learning environment, we recognize the importance of fostering safe and supportive communities. The Emergency Management Plan is designed to aid in the University’s mission to aid in the development of socially responsible individuals in a challenging global society.
Northeastern State University has an emergency response and evacuation procedures to deal with emergency situations. Once an emergency affecting the campus community has been confirmed, the campus community will be notified through the University’s Emergency Alert System.
The Emergency Alert System (EAS) notifies the community through text messages, emails, the UC marquee, voice mails and a campus wide public ad-dress system. The EAS will be activated as soon as possible after confirmation of a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of the students or employees occurring on the campus.
The University will, without delay, and taking into account the safety of the community, determine the content of the notification and initiate the EAS, unless the notification will, in the professional judgment of the concerned authorities, compromise efforts to assist victims or to contain, respond to, or otherwise miti-gate the emergency.
As first responders, the University Police Department will confirm that a significant emergency exists. University Police will notify their dispatcher who will activate the appropriate message for the EAS. These actions will be performed by the Chief of Police, officers and police dispatchers.
Should a larger emergency exist (an emergency affecting more than the campus community) the University Police will notify the Cherokee County Emergency Management office.
The EAS is tested quarterly to ensure proper operation. At least one of these tests will include the public address sys-tem and will be publicized. The University Police Department maintains records of all EAS testing.
