Osiyo! Galieliga tsidenadoliga! Hello, nice to meet you! I am the recruiter for the Native American population at Northeastern State University. I am a member of the Cherokee Nation. I graduated from Northeastern State University in May 2025 with a bachelor’s degree in freshwater Sciences.
NSU is truly my home away from home! There are wonderful people here who make you feel like family. The faculty and staff genuinely want you to succeed and grow at NSU. Even if you haven’t felt like you fit in elsewhere, NSU has communities where you can find your perfect fit! There are also endless opportunities available for students to take advantage of—whether it’s studying abroad, flying across the country, or discovering Tahlequah, new experiences await you!
NSU has a rich history and strong ties to the Cherokee Nation, so it understands and welcomes Native American students. During my time at NSU, I expanded my knowledge of various tribal cultures and found my place with the tribal communities here. We have a wonderful resource in the Center for Tribal Studies that houses scholarship information, student organizations, and fantastic tribal staff and students who will welcome you with open arms! I believe that education is a staple in guiding the next generation of Native Americans to further improve and support their tribe.
Soooooo, what are you waiting for? Schedule a personal tour of NSU with me!
Email me at Fields41@nsuok.edu or call me at 918-444-4679!
Wado! Donadagohvi! Thank you! Until we meet again!
ABOUT AJ
HOMETOWN:
Hulbert, OK
EDUCATION:
Bachelor of Science in Freshwater Sciences
FAVORITE ASPECT OF NSU:
My favorite aspect of NSU is the beauty and nature of the area. Behind the campus is a stunning creek supporting a wide variety of animals. The campus has one of every tree that thrives in Oklahoma. They make a wonderful study spot or a place to relax and enjoy the sounds of nature!
WHY I LOVE MY JOB:
I love my job because I get to interact with students from various tribes and show them how much I love NSU. I love supporting the next generation of Native college students to succeed and aid their communities!
FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS:
My favorite spot on campus is Second Century Square! I love to sit by the fountain and interact with all the students who pass by on their way to class. It’s also home to my favorite NSU Homecoming tradition: Green Til I Dye.
ADVICE TO PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS:
My advice would be not to be afraid. I understand how scary it is to explore the idea of college and leaving home. I was in your shoes not too long ago. You’ll have an amazing community here for you that understands. Take those chances, do what you want to do, and thrive!
