Faculty Mentor Toolkit
The Faculty Mentor Role
Faculty Mentors serve declared undergraduate students in the appropriate discipline, focusing on career advice, internship opportunities, research opportunities and future academic pursuits. Faculty mentors have in-depth knowledge of their field and are the best resource for expanding students' understanding of the discipline.
The overarching responsibility of a faculty mentor for undergraduate students is to
build relationships with majors in their disciplines, providing a meaningful contact
point for students for their academic training at NSU and post-graduation plans. Faculty
mentors are not experts in all areas of the university, but they should be informed
enough to provide useful information and act as an advocate for students. Some specific
areas in which faculty advisors/mentors may provide guidance include:
- Connecting students to relevant services at NSU
- Connecting curriculum to career readiness
- Discussing study abroad opportunities
- Discussing internship opportunities
- Facilitating research opportunities
- Counseling on career advice
- Counseling on graduate school opportunities
- Connecting students to career services for reviewing/editing resumes
- Referring students to the appropriate student affairs services
- Reaching out to students concerning academic alerts
All faculty with assigned Mentees may dowload their respective list through Argos. It is important to note the following:
- Argos reports are only accurate for the current term, as of the prior day: if a report is run on Tuesday, it will include any Banner changes made on Monday. Reports for a prior or future term should not be used.
- Reports should be run periodically throughout the semester. This will remove students who have been AW’d or OW’d from the list, and add any students who were assigned in the process of declaring a major during the current semester.
- Accessing Argos/Evisions from off-campus requires first logging in to NSU's VPN:

Faculty Mentor guidance goes beyond helping students complete the requirements of their academic programs. Faculty Mentorship also involves helping students:
- Understand the evolution of the discipline
- Engage in research
- See the discipline in relation to other fields
- Grasp the impact their discipline has on the world outside of college
- Pursue opportunities to apply their learning outside the classroom
Faculty mentors should impart a view of careers as an evolutionary process—one that
requires planning,
flexibility and adaptatability.
Faculty mentors should finds ways to help students develop relationships with other potential mentors through connections within the University, alumni, or outside organizations.
Faculty mentors who help students expand their relationships outside the discipline help students gain a more informed and realistic view of their major/career choices.
