Rowdy represents the spirit, pride, and values of Northeastern State University.

The mascot costume is managed by the University Relations Division (or designated department).

Rowdy serves as a goodwill ambassador for NSU at athletics and sanctioned community and university events.

All appearances must be requested through University Relations using a Mascot Appearance Request Form.

Priority is given to official NSU events (e.g., recruiting events, games, commencement, orientation). Scheduling and appearances are at the sole discretion of University Relations.

Rowdy may not appear at political, religious, or controversial events or where alcohol is present, such as a beer garden. Rowdy’s costume must be worn fully intact, do not remove portions of the costume (e.g., head, jersey, shoes)

• Rowdy is gender neutral and does not speak.
• Rowdy must always represent NSU positively — no speech, gestures, or behaviors that could reflect poorly on the university.
• No use of cell phones, gum, food, or drinks while in costume during appearances.
• Maintain character at all times when visible to the public.
• Respectful interaction only — avoid inappropriate physical contact or joke

Costume pieces are university property. If damages or cleaning issues arise, the department reserving the costume is financially responsible for all cleaning, repair and/or replacement fees.

Performers must:

• Check out and return the costume per schedule.
  
• Keep the costume clean, odor-free, and properly stored after each use.
  
• Report any damage immediately to University Relations.
  

No alterations, repairs, or loans of the costume are allowed without approval.

Storing the costume:  If you’re storing your costume for a short term, you can keep it in a box/bag.  For long-term storage, you should hang your costume on a clothing hanger, with the head upside down.

Cleaning the costume:  Do not attempt to clean the costume.  All cleanings will be conducted through University Relations. 

Performers must be physically fit to perform in costume (due to heat and limited vision).

Hydration and rest breaks are required for appearances longer than 30 minutes.

A handler or assistant must accompany Rowdy at all public events for crowd management and safety. The handler must remain in close proximity at all times.

Performances should be stopped immediately if the performer feels faint, overheated, or unwell.

Avoid dangerous stunts or interactions (e.g., lifting children, running in confined spaces).

Rowdy should embody energy, friendliness, and school spirit.

Use exaggerated gestures and body language for communication — no talking in costume.

Maintain high visibility at key campus events.

Respect other mascots and event staff at multi-school appearances.

In case of injury, heat exhaustion, or other medical emergency:

• The handler or event staff should remove the mascot head immediately.
  
• Move to a private, shaded area and contact emergency personnel.
  
• Notify University Relations immediately.
