Why avoid large images?

  • Large images load slowly in the browser
  • Large images put a serious dent in mobile user's data plans
  • Large images take up space in your website's File Management

Check the properties of the image file to see how large the image is. An ideal size for an image is about 25K, but any image size reduction is better than none.

Don't resize the original image, resize a copy.

To resize the image copy:

  1. Right click on the image file in the File Explorer, select Open With, Paint
  2. In the menu pane Image, select Resize
  3. Change the Resize by to Pixels
  4. Change Horizontal to 475px or a specific width depending where you want to place it on the website then and allow Vertical to maintain aspect ratio
  5. Select OK
  6. Select the main menu item File > Save As to save the resized image. Choose JPEG for photos taken with a camera and PNG or GIF for graphics created on the computer.
