Study Abroad Scholarship Opportunities
NSU offers several scholarship opportunities to help students with funding their study abroad experiences. Be sure to review each scholarship for eligibility requirements and application deadlines.
Office of International Programs Study Abroad Grant
The Study Abroad Grant is sponsored by the Office of International Programs to encourage more NSU students to participate in Study Abroad programs. All applications will be reviewed by the NSU Study Abroad Grant Selection Committee. If selected, the amount granted is listed below.
Semester Programs: $500 Grant
Year Long Programs: $1,000 Grant
Short Term Programs: Amount Varies
Eligibility:
- Enrolled as a full-time NSU student at the time of application, with
- a minimum 2.75 overall GPA, and
- have applied for an NSU affiliated study abroad program (Aoyama Gakuin University, ISEP, Brad Henry, faculty-led short-term programs, and Office of International Programs led trips.)
Deadline:
- April 1st --- application must be received by this date for Summer/Fall study abroad programs
- November 1st --- application must be received by this date for Winter/Spring programs
Application materials:
- Proof --- that you have been admitted to one NSU Study Abroad Program
- Transcript - must be an official transcript with a minimum 2.75 overall GPA
- Essay --- one-page reflective essay presenting the reasons why you are seeking this grant
Submit Your Application:
- Proof --- upload to Study Abroad Grant application form
- Transcript --- mail or drop off to the Study Abroad Coordinator at the Office of International Programs
- Essay --- upload to Study Abroad Grant application form
If selected to receive the study abroad grant, it will be added to your NSU Bursar Account:
- If there is no outstanding balance on the account, you can request the grant as a refund.
- If there is an outstanding balance, the grant will automatically become a payment to the balance.
Don & Mari Betz Global Citizen Scholarship Fund
The scholarship was established with funds specifically donated for the occasion of the inauguration of Dr. Don Betz as the 17th President of Northeastern State University. The scholarship endowment proceeds are to be used to award scholarship support to NSU students pursuing international studies opportunities outside the United States on a short-term or long-term program. The scholarship is competitive as it is only awarded to two students per year.
Required Qualifications of the Scholars
- Applicant must be in good academic standing with the university
- Applicant must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours
- Applicant must submit a reflective essay of no more than three (3) typed, double-spaced pages presenting their reasons for seeking the scholarship and in what ways this international learning opportunity will assist them in becoming a socially responsible global citizen.
Scholarship Amount:
The specific dollar amount of each scholarship will be determined by the Office of International Programs Scholarship Review Committee.
Application Deadlines
- April 1 – Applications must be received by this date for Summer/Fall study abroad programs
- November 1 – Applications must be received by this date for Winter/Spring study abroad programs
Notification:
Applicants will be notified of scholarship decisions by the NSU Scholarship Office.
Award Disbursement
Students selected to receive the study abroad scholarship will have the award applied to their NSU account. Funds are typically posted in early February for Spring semester programs and early September for Fall semester programs.
