Emergency Management Training

In recent years, a number of emergencies and disasters have impacted institutions of higher educations, revealing the need for advanced emergency preparedness. With campuses in three different communities, it is especially important that NSU has trained Emergency Operations Center personnel and Incident Management Teams able to function in the positions for which they hold.

In compliance with the National Incident Management System (NIMS), personnel with roles in emergency preparedness are required to complete training from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Many of these courses can be accessed online and completed in less than an hour.

Those assigned duties in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) or Incident Management Team (IMT) will need to complete the following training:

  • IS-100.HE: Introduction to the Incident Command System, ICS-100, for Higher Education
  • IS-700.a: NIMS: An Introduction
  • IS-800.b: National Response Framework, An Introduction
  • IS-200.a: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents

These training courses can be accessed on FEMA's independent study website.

IMT members are also required to take the following courses:

  • ICS-300: Intermediate ICS for Expanding Incidents
  • ICS-400: Advanced ICS

These are two day resident courses that can be arranged through the Emergency Manager.

EOC members are also required to take the following course:

  • ICS-402: ICS Overview for Executive/Senior Officials

This is a two hour resident course that can be arranged through the emergency manager.
