Certification Information
Certification Information for VA Education Benefits
This page explains how enrollment is certified to the Department of Veterans Affairs and what to expect during the certification process at Northeastern State University.
How Certification Works at NSU
Veterans Services certifies enrollment based on courses that apply to a student’s degree program. Each semester, certification is completed after students are enrolled and all required documents have been received.
Students must submit a Veterans Information Sheet each semester to request certification.
Important Things to Know
- Only courses that apply to your degree program can be certified for VA benefits
- Certification is completed after you are enrolled and all required documents have been received. Please allow 10–14 business days for processing
- You must submit a Veterans Information Sheet each semester. Submit at least two weeks before classes begin to help prevent delays in certification and benefit payments
- Changes to your schedule may impact your VA benefits
- Tuition and fees for Chapter 33 are reported after the final drop date for each part of term
- Housing payments are based on your training time (rate of pursuit) and course dates
Training Time (Rate of Pursuit)
Training time, also referred to as rate of pursuit, is based on the number of credit hours you are enrolled in and the length of your courses. It is used by the VA to determine eligibility for housing payments and how your benefits are applied.
Enrolling full-time may qualify you for full housing benefits, while enrolling less than full-time may reduce or eliminate housing payments depending on your rate of pursuit.
Courses that have not yet started or have already ended are not included in your current training time. Training time may change throughout the semester if you are enrolled in courses with different start and end dates.
The length of your courses also impacts your training time. The same course taken in an 8-week term is considered a higher rate of pursuit than when taken over a 16-week term.
For example, a 3-credit hour course taken over 8 weeks is considered twice the rate of pursuit of the same 3-credit hour course taken over a 16-week term.
For Chapter 33 (Post-9/11 GI Bill), housing payments are based on your rate of pursuit. You must be enrolled at more than half-time to receive housing, and payments are prorated based on your training time.
