Veterans Services FAQs

Getting Started

How do I start using my VA benefits at NSU?

To start using your VA education benefits, you must first apply for benefits through the VA and receive your Certificate of Eligibility (COE). You will also need to apply for admission to NSU, enroll in classes, and submit your required documents to Veterans Services. For more detailed information, see the Future Military Connected & Veteran Students page.

Enrollment & Certification

When will my classes be certified?

Classes will be certified after the Veterans Information Sheet is received each semester. Please allow up to two weeks for processing.

Summer certifications begin after April 1, fall certifications after June 1, and spring certifications after November 1.

Can I take classes that are not required for my degree?

All classes must apply to your degree program as shown on your degree audit, including major and minor requirements. General electives are only allowed during your final semester and only if needed to reach the minimum number of hours required to graduate.

Payments & Housing Allowance

When will I receive my payment?

For students required to verify enrollment, text messages are typically sent on the last day of the month, and payments are generally received within 5–7 days after verification.

For Chapter 33 (Post-9/11 GI Bill®) students, tuition and fees are reported to the VA after the final drop date of each part of term.

Who do I contact about my payment?

NSU Veterans Services does not have access to your payment or deposit dates. For questions about your payment, contact the VA Education Call Center at 1-888-442-4551.

Why is my housing allowance less than expected?

Housing allowance is based on your rate of pursuit and course dates. The VA does not pay housing allowance for classes that have not yet started or have already ended, which can cause your payment to be lower during parts of the semester.

Documents & Requirements

What documents do I need to submit?

For all chapters other than Chapter 31, submit your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) when you are first admitted.

For Chapter 31 (VR&E), submit your authorization or purchase order from your VR&E counselor.

Do I have to submit the Veterans Information Sheet every semester?

Yes. The Veterans Information Sheet must be submitted each semester you plan to use VA benefits. This form gives NSU permission to certify your enrollment to the VA.

General Questions

Do I need to verify my enrollment each month?

Can Veterans Services see my VA account or payment status?
