TIPS FOR PREPARING FOR A CAREER FAIR
Virtual Career Fairs
- Update your resume and upload to Handshake. Be sure to make it public so potential employers are able to view it.
- Complete your Handshake profile. Ensure your GPA is visible (uncheck “hide from employers”) and your work authorization status is updated. (settings > privacy).
- Set your profile visibility to Community or Employer. This allows you to schedule 1:1 sessions and group sessions.
- Sign up for sessions. Participating in a virtual career fair has two steps. After registering, do not forget to sign up for sessions with employers you are interested in.
- Research employers who are attending the fair. Researching the employers prior to the Career Fair will give you the chance to learn more about the opportunities the company has to offer.
- Create questions specific to the companies and positions of interest. This step not only helps you get the most out of your Career Fair experience, but also shows your true interest to the employers.
- Check back for available sessions frequently. Employers may update their sessions and schedules throughout the time prior to the Career Fair. Be sure to stay up to date and not miss out on any opportunities.
- Prioritize employers you are most interested in. "Follow" employers you’re interested in within the fair to be notified when additional sessions are available.
- Practice your Elevator Pitch. An elevator pitch is a quick speech about yourself and what you bring to the table. You only get one chance to make a first impression, so practice your pitch until it comes naturally.
- Meet with a Career Counselor. It is very important to meet with a career counselor to practice your elevator pitch, review your resume, and get any last minute advice you may need.
- Test your technology. Technology can be complicated sometimes. Be sure to be familiar with the technology you are using, It is recommended that you use Google Chrome if possible. Utilize Handshake’s Video Requirements & Troubleshooting for Students if needed.
In Person Career Fairs
- Remember why you are there! Career Fairs are exciting for many reasons. Remember that you are not there for the free swag only. You are also there to meet with potential employers and invest in your career. The Career Fair gives you an opportunity to explore different career options and majors that align with careers. You will begin networking when meeting representatives, which is important in helping you to reach your career pals, so ask lots of questions to find out about majors that are being recruited for particular careers, job shadowing or internship opportunities.
- Research companies and positions in advance. It is always impressive when you know about the company you are speaking to. It shows your interest and that you take initiative. Review the Directory for companies and organizations attending.
- Prepare your resume. Have your resume tailored to perfection when you meet with potential employers. It is highly recommended to have a resume review appointment with a career counselor beforehand.
- Meet with a career counselor. The Career Counselors at NSU are equipped to help you with all your professional needs. Meeting with one is highly recommended prior to the fair. You can utilize Career Services through mock interviews, a headshot photo, business cards, resume review, career path questions, and more!

- Collect business cards and contact information. Be sure to collect contact information from employers that interest you so you are able to follow up with them and contact them for more information.
- Follow up with employers you met. Touching base with potential employers after the Career Fair is always a great idea. A follow up email thanking them for their time shows your interest and keeps you at the forefront of their mind.
- Dress to impress. You only get to make one first impression, so it is important to make a good one. Check out Career Services’ Pinterest page for outfit inspiration.

Career Event FAQ's
NSU Career Services is commonly asked what to expect at our events. See below for an outline of what each event looks like and some tips on how to navigate them successfully!
- Career Fairs
- Think of Career Fairs as speed dating for employers and job seekers. At these events, companies and graduate schools provide information while applicants offer cover letters and resumes. NSU Career Fairs are completely free to students and alumni. Proper attire for these events are business casual, and do not forget your resumes!
- Virtual Career Fairs
- A virtual career fair is an online event in which employers and job seekers each meet in a virtual environment, using video and chat features on Handshake to network and exchange information about career exploration, job or internship opportunities, graduate school programs and application processes. Pre-registration is required and only currently enrolled NSU students and NSU Alumni are able to participate.
- Etiquette Dinners
- NSU Career Services presents Etiquette Dinners per semester, one on the Tahlequah campus and one on the Broken Arrow campus. The cost for students is $7, which purchases an entire meal. At this sit-down event, students view a presentation covering proper etiquette. Appropriate attire for these events are business casual. Participants will hear and practice how to properly dine and network in a professional setting. Increase your chances of getting a job through the hands-on, professional skills gained at this event.
- Workshops
- Workshops are interactive events with discussion over a particular topic. NSU Career Services regularly has free workshops on topics such as resume writing, transferable skills, being career fair ready, LinkedIn, etc. Bring with you a willingness to learn, a pen or pencil, and some paper for note taking.
