NSU has partnered with Aoyama Gakuin University (AGU) in Tokyo, Japan through which NSU students may study abroad on exchange. This allows students to pay NSU tuition and fees while immersing themselves in one of Japan’s leading private universities.

"To be entirely honest I didn't have much of an idea about what kinds of people I'd meet while studying abroad, but I ended up becoming close friends with not just Japanese people but also people from Korea, the Philippines, Russia, China, Mexico, the U.K., Turkey, Tanzania, as well as students from a ton of different states in America! More than the experience of being in Japan, which I did love a whole lot, my favorite aspect was hanging out with my friends, talking about homework and little incidents and then heading into Shibuya to find something to eat. The coursework was hard and there were some really challenging points too, but I wouldn't trade the overall experience for anything."

Academic Information:
All NSU students seeking to study abroad on an approved affiliated, partner, or exchange program must complete a Course Approval Form for their education abroad coursework to be applied toward major, minor, and/or core requirements.
Undergraduate exchange students are required to take at least 14 credits per semester at AGU (at least 10 hours of class time per week) in order to maintain student visa status
Since AGU courses are typically 2 credit hours each, students should list at least 8–9 courses on the Course Approval Form. Having additional courses pre-approved provides a cushion in case you are unable to enroll in a particular course or need to drop one. Each 2-credit course at AGU will count as 2 credit hours at NSU.
AGU Transcript
- Transcript will be issued by host university
- Course credit earned from host university can be transferred as NSU credits by completing the NSU Course Approval Form.
- Transferred credit will be counted toward graduation after the Registrar Office approves the course evaluation report if the course matches with NSU degree plan
Note: The Course Approval Form replaces the WES Evaluation; however, if deemed necessary by NSU, an external evaluation (such as through WES or ECE) may be required at the students' personal expense)
AGU Academic Calendar
AGU follows a different academic calendar than NSU, so the semester dates might feel a bit unfamiliar.

If enrolling for a fall semester at AGU, be sure to discuss this with your academic advisor, Financial Aid, Bursar and Scholarship as it may affect enrollment for the Spring semester at NSU.

Program Cost Information
Expense Breakdown
- Tuition & Fees: Bilateral exchange students will be charged 15 hours of NSU tuition and fees to their NSU account.
- Housing: Students will select preferred housing and pay directly to the housing provider in Japan.
- Meals: Students will be responsible for their own meals. Meal plans are available through the host university.
- Other Expenses: Students will be responsible for their own meals, textbooks, airfare, passport and visa fees, health insurance, daily living costs and any other expenses.
Financial Aid & Scholarships:
- Financial Support: In most cases, federal financial aid and existing institutional scholarships can be applied to your exchange semester. If you have scholarships that specifically state they must cover certain charges, but you are not billed for those charges at NSU, then you would not be able to use that specific funding. Check with NSU Financial Aid and the NSU Scholarship Office for details.
- Study Abroad Grant: Students can apply for a Study Abroad Grant to help offset the cost of studying abroad. Visit the Office of International Programs Scholarship webpage to learn more, and reach out to the Scholarship Office for additional opportunities.

Student Responsibilities Before Applying
Before completing the NSU to AGU Nominee Form, students should:
- Meet with academic advisor: Meet with your Advisor about whether studying abroad is a good fit for your academic plan. Discuss whether study abroad fits your graduation timeline.
- Meet with Financial Aid, Bursar, and Scholarship Office: Meet with Financial Aid, Bursar’s Office and the Scholarship Office soon to learn how your aid may apply toward the study abroad program.

Application Process
Step 1: Confirm you Meet Eligibility Requirements
- NSU full-time student
- 2.5 GPA or higher
- Good academic & disciplinary standing (student conduct checks will be done once a student has applied for a program)
- Sophomore standing recommended for semester programs (completed at least 30 hours at the time of study abroad program)
- Valid Passport (students will need a copy of their passport which is valid at least 6 months after the scheduled return date.)
Step 2: NSU to AGU Nominee Form (Phase 1)
Before you can apply to AGU, you must be officially nominated by NSU. By completing the NSU to AGU nominee form, students are formalizing their interest in studying abroad at AGU.

Once the form is submitted, the student will be notified if they have been selected to attend AGU and can begin the AGU application.

Step 3: Complete the AGU Application (Phase 2)
Once the Office of International Programs approves your nomination, you will be invited to complete the formal AGU application. Typical application deadlines are Mid-April for Fall Semester and Mid-November for Spring Semester.

- Health Certificate - On the Tahlequah Campus, NeoHealth can assist with the health
certificate if needed.
- (Applicants are responsible for confirming whether their medications can be brought into Japan, obtaining any required import certificates, preparing alternative medications if needed, and bringing a referral letter if they have ongoing medical conditions. Students will need to complete the Yunyu Kakunin-sho if bringing specific medications.)
- Bank Certification of Deposit (English) Financial Aid can provide a letter confirming your good financial standing with the university. If needed, you can reach out to your personal bank to request proof of adequate funds—typically a bank statement or documentation showing you have the necessary funds for study abroad.

Student Visa Information
Students will need to obtain a visa to study in Japan for a semester.
If you are a resident of Oklahoma: your application must be processed by the Consulate-General of Japan in Houston. Please contact them for any questions before you submit the application and documents whether in person or by mail.

Step 4: Complete the NSU Required Documents (Phase 3)
Students will be added to the NSU Study Abroad Blackboard Org, where they can complete and submit required documents and schedule their mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation.
