Toyo University
NSU has partnered with Toyo University through which NSU students may study abroad on exchange. Bilateral exchange involves paying NSU tuition and fees to NSU for courses taken on campus at the host institution.

Toyo University has two international exchange dormitories. These dormitories are places where Japanese students and international students can live together and interact with each other.
Most exchange students attend the Hakusan Campus.
- AI-House Hub 4: 15 commute by train to campus

Dormitory fee: 50,000 yen (only at the time of admission, no refund)
Single-person bedroom (private room): 81,000 yen/month
Two-person bedroom (shared room): 51,000 yen/month
Housing fees include utilities, water and internet usage.

Most psychology, science and computer science courses will NOT be available to study abroad students.

Academic Information:
Hakusan is the only campus where study abroad courses are offered.
All NSU students seeking to study abroad on an approved affiliated, partner, or exchange program must complete a Course Approval Form for their education abroad coursework to be applied toward major, minor, and or core requirements.
Undergraduate exchange students are required to take at least 14 credits per semester at Toyo (at least 10 hours of class time per week) in order to maintain student visa status Units | Toyo University.
Since Toyo courses are typically 2 credit hours each, students should list at least 8–9 courses on the Course Approval Form. Having additional courses pre-approved provides a cushion in case you are unable to enroll in a particular course or need to drop one. Each 2-credit course at Toyo will count as 2 credit hours at NSU.
Toyo Transcript
- Transcript will be issued by host university
- Course credit earned from host university can be transferred as NSU credits by completing the NSU Course Approval Form.
- Transferred credit will be counted toward graduation after the Registrar Office approves the course evaluation report if the course matches with NSU degree plan
Note: The Course Approval Form replaces the WES Evaluation; however, if deemed necessary by NSU, an external evaluation (such as through WES or ECE) may be required at the students' personal expense)
Toyo Academic Calendar
Toyo follows a different academic calendar than NSU, so the semester dates might feel a bit unfamiliar.
Fall Semester: End of September – End of January
Spring Semester: April – Late July
If enrolling for a fall semester at Toyo, be sure to discuss this with your academic advisor, Financial Aid, Bursar and Scholarship as it may affect enrollment for the Spring semester at NSU.

Program Cost Information
Expense Breakdown
- Tuition & Fees: Bilateral exchange students will be charged NSU tuition and fees to their NSU account.
- Housing: Students will select preferred housing and pay directly to the housing provider in Japan.
- Other Expenses: Students will be responsible for their own meals, textbooks, airfare,
passport and visa fees, health insurance, daily living costs and any other expenses.
- Housing Rates: Refer to Housing under the "About Program" tab.
- Textbooks and reference books: Toyo estimates 20,000 JPY/$130.00
- Transportation Expenses: Toyo estimates about 12,000 JPY/$75.00 for a 3-month commuter pass.
- Campus Cafeteria per Toyo: Meals are available for about 580 JPY/$4.00. The cafeteria is open 10:00am to 8:00pm, Monday-Saturday, except during the university’s long vacation periods and holidays. There are many supermarkets, convenience stores, and restaurants around Hakusan Campus.
- Health Insurance: Study abroad students are required by Japanese law to enroll in Japanese National Health Insurance (NHI). The insurance fee is approximately 1,900 JPY/$13.00 per month. With Japanese National Health Insurance, students pay 30% of the medical costs when they go to see doctors. More details about the insurance are provided during orientation sessions to be held upon your arrival. You will apply for NHI during orientation.
- Living Expenses:

- Meals (approximately 50,000 JPY). Residence in the AI-House HUB-4 includes breakfast and dinner on weekdays except during long vacation periods. Beyond that, you should budget approximately 30,000 JPY for meals.
- National Health Insurance fees (1,900 JPY)
- Other, such as transportation fee (10,000 JPY) *If you include commuter pass, you will need more than 15,000 JPY

Since Japan is still primarily a cash-based society, there are many cases where credit cards are not accepted. Study abroad students are recommended to have at least 150,000 to 200,000 JPY in cash for their first two months.
Financial Aid & Scholarships:
- Financial Support: In most cases, federal financial aid and existing institutional scholarships can be applied to your exchange semester. If you have scholarships that specifically state they must cover certain charges, but you are not billed for those charges at NSU, then you would not be able to use that specific funding. Check with NSU Financial Aid and the NSU Scholarship Office for details.
- Study Abroad Grant: Students can apply for a Study Abroad Grant to help offset the cost of studying abroad. Visit the Office of International Programs Scholarship webpage to learn more, and reach out the Scholarship Office for additional opportunities.

Student Responsibilities Before Applying
Before completing the NSU to Toyo Nominee Form, students should:
- Meet with academic advisor: Meet with your Advisor about whether studying abroad is a good fit for your academic plan. Discuss whether study abroad fits your graduation timeline.
- Meet with Financial Aid, Bursar, and Scholarship Office: Meet with Financial Aid, Bursar’s Office and the Scholarship Office soon to learn how your aid may apply toward the study abroad program.

Application Process
Step 1: Confirm you Meet Eligibility Requirements
- NSU full-time student
- 2.5 GPA or higher
- Good academic & disciplinary standing (student conduct checks will be done once a student has applied for a program)
- Sophomore standing recommended for semester programs (completed at least 30 hours at the time of study abroad program)
- Valid Passport (students will need a copy of their passport which is valid at least 6 months after the scheduled return date.)
Step 2: NSU to Toyo Nominee Form (Phase 1)
By completing the NSU to Toyo nominee form, students are formalizing their interest in studying abroad at Toyo University.

Once the form is submitted, the student will be notified if they have been selected to attend Toyo and can begin the Toyo application.

Step 3. Toyo University Application (Phase 2)
Once a student has been notified by the Office of International Programs of their nomination to attend Toyo University, students will be notified when they can begin their Toyo University Application.

- Copy of passport (Passport valid at least 6 months after your scheduled return date.)
- Academic transcript
- Letter of Recommendation
- Passport-style photo / facial photo
- Bank Balance Certificate (English) You can reach out to your personal bank to request proof of adequate funds—typically a bank statement or documentation showing you have the necessary funds for study abroad. If applicable, students receiving Financial Aid can log into their GoNSU account and print their award information. Students receiving Scholarships can request a letter stating the award amount and terms.
- Health Certificate - On the Tahlequah Campus, NeoHealth can assist with the health
certificate if needed.
- (Applicants are responsible for confirming whether their medications can be brought into Japan, obtaining any required import certificates, preparing alternative medications if needed, and bringing a referral letter if they have ongoing medical conditions. Students will need to complete the Yunyu Kakunin-sho if bringing specific medications.)
Student Visa Information
Students will need to obtain a visa to study in Japan for a semester.
If you are a resident of Oklahoma: your application must be processed by the Consulate-General of Japan in Houston. Don’t hesitate to contact them for any questions before you submit the application and documents whether in person or by mail.

Please note: Obtaining a visa is the responsibility of the student.
Staying in Japan Upon Completion of Program
Per Toyo: Under the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act, you are required to return to your home country once your period of study has ended, even if you still have time remaining on your “Student” status of residence. Regardless of the remaining validity of your status of residence, you are expected to return to your home country within approximately two weeks after the completion of your exchange program at Toyo University. Please note that you are not permitted to stay in Japan with the “Student” status of residence once your exchange period has concluded.
Step 4: Complete the NSU Required Documents (Phase 3)
Students will be added to the NSU Study Abroad Blackboard Org, where they can complete and submit required documents and schedule their mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation.
