Student Complaints

Student Complaints

Students may issue written grievances addressing a number of concerns.  Each grievance will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the person responsible for the resolution of the complaint.  Complaints may be filed for issues such as, but not limited to, discrimination, accessibility issues, sexual assault/harassment, violations of free speech, and many other concerns.

Students who have complaints should utilize the Report Concern link, found on every page of the NSU website at the very bottom of the page in the footer.  If you need guidance about this process, please reach out to the Dean of Students at 918-444-2120; studentaffairs@nsuok.edu.

Informal Complaint Resolution

When possible and safe to do so, the student should attempt to resolve the situation directly with the other individual(s), organization(s) involved, and/or with their supervisor(s).  Once a report is received, Student Affairs may assist with an informal resolution as appropriate and in alignment with other university policies and procedures.

If an appropriate resolution cannot be reached through informal process, a written complaint may be filed by using the Report Concern link.

Report Concern

To file a written complaint, students should utilize the Report Concern link.  The options are as follows:

  • Academic Misconduct: This form is for reporting acts of misconduct such as cheating, plagiarism, or falsification.
  • Gender-Based and Sexual Misconduct Discrimination (Title IX): This form may be used to report gender-based and sexual misconduct such as sexual assault, hazing, harassment, and stalking.
  • Discrimination: This form may be used to report discrimination and/or harassment based on protected status such as, but not limited to, discrimination or harassment based on race, age, disability, or other protected class.
  • Behavioral Concerns: This form allows students to report a variety of concerns such as concerns about another student’s wellbeing, mental health, housing issues/homelessness, lack of necessities, statements of self-harm, threats to others, or concerns that this person may be in a domestic violence or other dangerous situation.
  • Compliments and Complaints: If the other forms do not seem to meet your needs, this form is a general form to be used as needed.
  • NSU Teacher Education Complaints/Concerns: To be used when reporting complains or concerns related to clinical education, internship, cooperating teacher experiences, and other teacher education concerns.
  • EthicsPoint: This form will refer you to the Regional University System of Oklahoma (RUSO) tip line. Any behavior that is believed to be unethical, illegal, or inappropriate may be reported here.
  • Oklahoma Free Speech Committee: This will take you to the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Free Speech Violation Complaint form where you can report violations of free speech on campus.

Formal Complaint Resolution:

Upon receipt of a formal complaint, the appropriate administrator will be notified of the complaint.  This administrator may need to first clarify the report and request additional information.

The administrator, such as the Director of HR, Title IX Coordinator, Director of Student Conduct, or Vice President/Provost, will review the complaint and seek a resolution according to applicable university policies and processes.

Appeals

In most cases, the applicable university policy related to your complaint will include an appeals process.  However, if your case does not fall under one of those categories and/or if no appeal process is written, students may direct a request for appeal to the appropriate Vice President and/or designee (918-444-2120; studentaffairs@nsuok.edu) for review.  The Vice President and/or designee will then determine who should address the appeal and direct the appeal as needed for review and resolution.
